Community

We celebrate the opportunities we have to come together as a community at Hill, such as the Sock Hop and Hill Carnival.  We also actively want to provide an opportunity for our children to be involved in reaching out to the broader community.  Human and Community programs give us an opportunity to demonstrate the values we teach and to genuinely help others.

We CAN food drive

For a week in the fall and a week in the spring, Hill students can bring non-perishable food items to provide to needy families in the Austin area.

Pull for the House

Hill has joined the larger community in supporting the Ronald McDonald House in their “Pull for the House” program.  The program is as simple as it sounds – just save the tabs from your soda cans, pet food, and tuna cans and bring them to Hill.  The Ronald McDonald House recycles them to provide funding for lodging and support services to families of critically ill and injured children.  We also collect items from their wish list: large bath towels (white or beige), anti-bacterial hand soap, liquid laundry detergent (high efficiency), styro-foam to-go containers (large), dishwasher detergent, breakfast/granola/cereal bars, bedspreads – light-weight & washable, trash bags – 30 & 10 gallon, sugar & creamer for coffee, 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper.  Best of all, this is a program that costs you nothing to contribute, and in which our children can play a very tangible role.  Contact Jennifer Kramer for more information.

Pet Drive

Our Pet Drive will help the Austin Humane Society where your kind contributions will help ensure that homeless pets receive the best care possible before finding permanent, loving homes. Most of us have or have had a pet that we love dearly.  However, Austin also has a large population of homeless dogs and cats that find refuge at the Austin Humane Society.  AHS is Austin’s largest no kill, non-profit animal adoption shelter dedicated to saving Austin’s homeless cats and dogs by educating our community about responsible pet ownership and reducing pet overpopulation.  During our week of Caring and Sharing, we are asking for your contributions.   Your kind generosity will help ensure that homeless pets receive the best care possible before finding permanent, loving homes.

The following types of donations are encouraged:

  • Gift cards to PetSmart, Petco, Target and Sam’s Club
  • Canned pet food or jarred baby food (meat only)
  • Store bought dog and cat treats
  • Non-clumping cat litter
  • Non-spill stainless steel bowls
  • Dog/cat toys
  • Paper towels, old linens and bath towels

For the complete 2009 AHS Wish List and for more information visit: www.austinhumanesociety.org.

We will have a collection week for this organization in the fall and in the spring.  Contact Adrienne Seiler to help.

Coats for Kids/Operation School Bell

Did you know that Austin has an average of 88 days a year where the temperature is below 45 degrees? Did you know that Austin has an average of 19 days a year where the temperature is below freezing?  We all need warm winter coats and Coats for Kids is an annual community project that collects and distributes warm winter coats to eligible children and teenagers in Central Texas.  Coats for Kids is in its 21st year and its goal is to make sure every child in the Austin area has a warm winter coat.  Last year, with the help of our sponsors and community volunteers, Coats for Kids distributed approximately 30,200 coats to young people in Central Texas. Bring your coats of any sizes, even adult, and make a difference in your community and in the lives of the children of Central Texas.  Contact Mary Fincken to help.

Blood Drive

Once in the fall and once in the spring, the Hill Community will again be responding to the Central Texas Blood and Tissue Center. You’ve read or heard the pleas from the blood bank in the media to help replenish the central Texas blood supply.  Hill Elementary School has signed up to help . . . and they’ve made it easy for us.

We will host a Blood Drive for the Central Texas Blood and Tissue Center where your donation will help ensure this life-saving gift is available when your Central Texas neighbors need it, and a Bone Marrow Donor Drive for the National Marrow Donor Program where you could possibly save the life of one of thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases. Contact Shari Jankowsky about the blood drive and Stephanie Kurio about the Bone Marrow Donor Drive.

Backpacks, Sleeping Bags, & Sock Drive

Lifeworks, which helps homeless and at-risk youth and children will benefit from a drive by Cub Scout Pack 511, Den 11 & 12 to collect used or new dark colored adult backpacks, used or new dark adult thermal sleeping bags, & adult tube socks. Contact Paula Ramsay to help.

If you have any questions or would like to help out, please contact Elissa Sterling via email or at 418-8540.  Thanks!
