Dear Hill Community,
Welcome back to school Hill Dillos! I hope that you all have had a wonderful summer vacation! I found some time to travel to Disneyland and Legoland in California with my family. We enjoyed spending quality together in such beautiful weather. And, may I say, that Space Mountain is just about the best ride in the world! It is hard to believe that it is almost time to return to school. I cannot wait to see you on the first day of school and hear about your “Dillo Best” moments of the summer!
I am so thrilled to be returning for my 2nd year as Principal of Hill Elementary School. I have worked in AISD for most of my sixteen-year career in education, teaching grades 2nd through 6th, and then serving the communities of Menchaca Elementary as Assistant Principal and Pease Elementary as Principal. Now, I am proud to say that I’m a Hill Dillo for life!
This is going to be an incredible school year. Our staff is fast at work preparing for the start of the school year. We have new A/C units throughout our main building, renovated exterior doors and a newly re-striped parking lot. Our wonderful PTA has installed the new memory bricks on our front sidewalk. We have a new portable on campus, which will house two 2nd grade classrooms. And, our much anticipated technology innovation stations have arrived!
As many of you may know, we lost our beloved Peggy Huckabay, Reading Specialist, to cancer this summer. She was fortunate enough to see her daughter married the weekend before she passed. We are grateful for the love and care she provided our students and to all of us. We already miss her so much.
We will have many new staff members to welcome to our school this year, along with many new students and their families. We welcome Zane Wubbena, to teach our new SCORES program. Carolyn Opps, recently from Gullett, will teach 5th grade along with Eric Walker, coming from Murchison, and Mr. Jacob Mayer, from Nederland, Texas. Xan Benton, Mrs. Tigelaar’s long-term substitute, will join the 4th grade team, along with Mrs. Catherine Haynes, former Hill teacher. Kelly Friede, recently at Pease, and Laura Humple, recently a teacher intern at Hill, will also join the 4th grade team. Last, but not least, Cheryl Styskal will be returning to 4th grade, after being our Math Specialist last year. Erin Ganakas, a past Teacher’s Assistant, will be one of our PPCD teachers. Alexa Rushing comes to Hill as our new Reading Specialist. We also welcome Rusty Knotts, as one of our Teaching Assistants. And, finally, Kellie Trinidad will join the office staff and job share with Mrs. Loflin.
Back to School time will look a little different this year. Students will receive a post card from their teacher, rather than a phone call. Class lists will be posted in the windows of the front entrance after 4 PM on Wednesday, August 18. Teacher Helper Day will also be on Wednesday, August 18. Kindergarten will hold their Back-to-School Night (adults only) on Thursday, August 19, from 6:30-8 PM. Our Open House will be Friday, August 20, from 11 AM to 1 PM. This will be your opportunity to join PTA, buy your Hill T-shirt, and more including briefly meeting your new teacher. First Day of School is Monday, August 23. Please report directly to your classroom on this first day.
Go Dillos!
Ms. Beth Ellis, Your Proud Principal
